Samurai Warriors 4 DX Review: Resurgence of the samurai game
Published: 22 May 2024

Samurai Warriors 4 DX brings players back to Japan’s ancient battlefields, with the latest update’s Samurais making the outdated fighting gameplay once again shine.

The Samurai Warriors 4 DX is an action role-playing game launched in May 2024 by Omega Force, a subsidiary of game manufacturer Koei Tecmo. This version is a high-definition enhanced version of the fourth part of the Samurai Warriors series released nine years ago, and integrates the content of all past DLC and derivative works, greatly enhancing the gameplay.

The game is set in the Sengoku/ Civil war period of Japanese history, where warlords fought to rule the land, and the story mode is its main attraction. This mode is divided into twelve different character camp legends. Each camp follows its own interests to unfold the story, and presents players with a fantasy-style Japanese historical story from different perspectives. After this upgrade, there are a total of 56 characters based on the Japanese Warring States Period available in this game, and each character has completely independent attack actions and skill designs.

The biggest feature of the series – the thousand-man battlefield and hacking and slashing has been optimized to the greatest extent in this game. A large number of enemy characters share the scene on the same screen with the player. The sense of blow and pleasure of killing multiple enemy fighters with one sword is unmatched by other games. In particular, players can add different effects to their combos, such as freezing, thunder or fire, bringing powerful visual impact.

The highlights of this game don’t stop there. The game’s secondary chronicle mode has become the best choice to increase the player’s sense of immersion. In this mode, I traveled through war-torn Japan as my own custom character, building relationships with the cast as I fought alongside and against each other. Battles are smaller in scale and, unlike story conflicts, tend to revolve around a primary goal, whether that’s protecting allies from attack or fighting your way through a marauding army.

The most exhilarating feature of the series – the thousand-man battlefield and hacking and slashing-has been taken to new heights in this game. A multitude of enemy characters fill the screen, creating a thrilling atmosphere. The sheer satisfaction of eliminating multiple foes with a single stroke is a unique experience that sets this game apart. What’s more, players can enhance their combos with stunning effects like freezing, thunder, or fire, delivering a powerful visual spectacle.

(The battle scene of the Game.)

When I completed the mission to save my allies in the game, I was very moved by the real reaction of instantly releasing the tension.

Random conflicts keep things from getting too repetitive, but there’s plenty to do besides bickering. On the battlefield, you can strengthen your rapport with other playable characters, unlocking a series of conversations with each member of the colorful cast.

Although Koei Tecmo has previously launched the series of orthodox sequel “Samurai Warriors 5”, its failed innovation and poor optimization have made players prefer the design and gameplay of “Samurai Warriors 4”. Therefore, the launch of “Samurai Warriors 4 DX” is a long-awaited carnival for fans of the series. Its gameplay, characters, and stories are far superior to Samurai Warriors 5, and much better than Samurai Warriors 4-II.

In fact, Samurai Warriors 4 DX has improved a lot of optimization of past flaws. Among the games in the same series, it has already achieved its level of excellence. The game’s glory shines through in its strangely compelling, electronically-inspired traditional Japanese soundtrack, dynamic voice acting, and some of the best visuals any Warriors has ever seen, as well as a subtle color palette and undoubtedly the most incredible visuals—Omega Force’s historically engaging and picturesque level design.

The game can be considered a blast for fans of samurai culture and fighting game enthusiasts alike. Although it is controversial that it is just a “Re-release,” it is still an integrated version that combines many advantages of the previous game.
